The Oshkosh 1070 was originally developed for the US Army as a Heavy Equipment Transporter or ‘HET’ for short to carry its M1 Abrams main battle tank (MBT), & entered service in 1993. It has an 8x8 drive configuration with steerable rear axle, air suspension & is powered by a 700hp Caterpillar C18, driving through an Allison 4800SP transmission, & an Oshkosh built transfer box. It is equipped with a 6 man cab (crew of 2, plus the 4 man crew from the MBT being carried), a central tyre inflation system & twin 55,000lb winches. Its normal trailer for tank transporter work with the US military is the 5 axle M1000 unit with a 70 ton capacity.
