Perhaps one of the more unorthodux designs in the history of trucking in North America, Mack’s U series was easily distinguished by its cab being offset well to the left of the vehicle, a feature which placed the driver directly in line with the front wheel, and also by its very short hood which resulted in a bumper to back of cab dimension comparable to cab over engine designs enabling full length trailers to be coupled. Many saw extensive service with fleet operators and, some 40 odd years after they first hit the highways, working examples can still be seen and are becoming sought after for restoration projects.
